Written/Unwritten: Diversity and the Hidden Truths of Tenure is a collection of essays and interviews by and about scholars of color from around the country about their experiences on the tenure track (see overview for more information). As the book’s title suggests, there are two sets of rules that faculty are subjected to when applying for reappointment, tenure, and promotion: those made explicit in handbooks, faculty orientations, and determined by union contracts and those that operate under the surface. It is this second set of rules that disproportionally affects faculty of color who are often hired to “diversify” academic departments and then expected to meet ever-shifting requirements set by tenured colleagues and administrators.

The purpose of the blog connected to the anthology is to collect news articles and op-ed pieces focused on the issue of diversity, affirmative action, and tenure cases under dispute. I also write about issues that came up during the process of editing the anthology.
